A Well Deserved Day Off

The team is rested and refreshed for the push that is coming to finish the houses and complete our mission here in Honduras.  We have a busy couple days ahead of us, so we soaked in the day off.

We woke early to be ready for our buses that were late to pick us up (we were prepared for that).

We traveled to Tegucigalpa for mass at the Basilica de Suyapa. Prior to mass, we were able to tour the grounds, visiting the original church, built in the mid-1700’s. We took time to light candles and pray for our loved ones and friends.  A short walk later landed us in the chapel of miracles.  People who have experienced a miracle in their life visit the chapel and give thanks by placing a token representing the miracle. It is a wonderful sight!

We were lucky enough to watch Fr Doug celebrate mass, it was so neat to watch him in this setting.  We were warmly welcomed by all.  After mass, we continued looking around and then boarded the buses to head to a delicious lunch of hamburguesas y papas fritas (french fries).  It was a welcome reminder of home!

We walked to Valle de Angeles for shopping and ice cream and then back to Nueva Capital.  The bus ride back was full of singing and laughs.

We are going to continue our day of relaxation with supper, junta and fierce card games.  We will be back tomorrow with updates and pics at the work sites.

We miss you all, thanks for checking in on us…we are loving your comments.  As much as we look forward to seeing you all, we are trying to soak up our last days of this amazing adventure!

  1. It sounds and looks like a fantastic day! Praise be to God!
Well, the rabbit is still around! Emmy brought her dog Winnie and when Winnie had to go out she dragged Emmy where the rabbit was:) Emmy is convinced that Winnie would not hurt the rabbit though. Me, I just think it is one lucky rabbit!
It was a busy day at the farm, Dad worked somewhat on his plumbing job, Uncle Dave worked on the truck. The girls and Emmy were busy playing a lot of Mario Kart. Chris was breaking his coon hide. He and Dad also cut back that apple tree.
I put some like things with like things in a cabinet or two, that is not an easy task, there are so many things that are alike in a lot of different places. AHHHH!
I had a nice long talk with Aunt Leslie too, over a cup of coffee or two. Got home too late!
Glad you had a great day!
    We love you!
    Love,
    Mom

  2. Ice cream and your hair is down!! Today's pictures look like you were able to experience another side of the culture of Honduras. And you got to do one of your favorite things - shop! Although I am sure that only 4 sleeps left for you in Honduras seems very short, you have much left to accomplish. What an amazing journey. I cannot wait to hear everything and to see how you have grown. Know that we all miss you but are so glad you are where you are! Work hard tomorrow!

  7. Sounds like a day well deserved! How fun to experience not only working hard, but enjoying some treats and of course my favorite, shopping!!! I was bet $1000 that I probably have clothes in the closet with tags on them still. I say nope, but I did just order some new clothes, so then yes;) Jossy wanted me to tell you HI, we hardly saw her all weekend, she was hibernating away in her room like usual. Of course Quade had friends over all weekend, because he never gets to do anything! Ava was, welp, Ava, just wait until you open all her snaps. She did get CPR certified again, not sure you want to trust her with saving your life hahaha JK I'm sure she'll be great. Dad and I had enjoyed the weekend off, but did get a lot of things done around the house. You missed an amazing Iowa girls game last night, 41 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds!!! They play Friday, so we'll have to plan on watching that. Creighton lost by 1, everyone thinks that refs blew that game for them, wish they could have pulled it off. Texas also lost, they were ahead by 12 with only a few minutes left and let Miami come back and pull it off. UConn destroyed Gonzaga and Fl Atlantic beat Kansas St by 3. So far this tournament has been awesome to see all the top teams lose, but not so much for my bracket. This weekends game should be fun!
Grandma Pat wanted me to let you know she loves you and is so proud of you!!! I can't believe you only have 3 more sleeps left. I'm sure if seems like it has gone fast and don't want it to end. We can't wait to see you, continue to work hard! Love you!!

  8. Hello Derek, this is your mother. I have been technically challenged and Erica is letting me use her account as all our google accounts won't let me use them to comment here. I obviously need you home to help me! I love all the new posts on the blog and seeing the picture of what everyone is doing! I cannot wait to hear about it in person! I can't believe how fast you all are putting up those houses and building all the beds. We are anxiously awaiting spring at home. Grandma and I went to Ames to see the girls on Friday and hear about their trip to Ecuador. We went to the St Thomas Aquinas fish fry on Friday and enjoyed the winery outside of Ames. On Saturday we had fun at the sorority mom's day painting and meeting the other girls/moms. On the way back home, we didn't see any snow until we got to Correctionville. Maybe it will all melt before you get home. Dad is missing you too! He is hoping you come back soon so I feed him better meals. It's really no fun cooking for just 2. And it is very quiet here without you. Not sure I am gonna like it next year being an empty nester. Marley sits in your room and wonders when you are coming back. Enjoy your last few days there. It will go quick and I can't wait to squeeze you and hear all about your adventures. God's many blessings to all of you as you are His hands and feet. Prayers for safe travels too. Love you more, Mom

  9. You look like you're having the time of your life Jenna! It's so weird seeing you with out glasses 😂 So far it looks like the weather is going to be good for prom on Saturday but it could change quickly since it is supposed to snow/rain on Friday. My saxophone choir got a 2 a state on Saturday which is better than I thought we would do given Sebastian switched parts the day before. ISASP's are about the most boring thing ever so be glad you're missing them. Other than that not much else is going on here. Can't wait for you to get back on Friday! Might even convince JeriKay and Jason let me come to the welcome home thing since I won't even be at school Friday because I have livestock judging at SDSU. Love you so much, can't wait for you to get back and give you a big hug!!!!!

  11. Hi Leah and team! I love seeing all the smiles in the pictures! Looks like you enjoyed a rest day. Leah, it is seriously quiet around here without you! I am so excited to see you! I subbed today and picked up that paint that I am dreading! I got to show the religion classes The Chosen, which you know I am obsessed with watching so I loved it! We facetimed Katelyn for her birthday yesterday. I had Keri hang up the happy birthday signs I made for her around their house. Keep soaking in all God wants to show and teach you and bless you with!
    Love,
    Mom
