One House Is in Living Color

The missioners crawled out of bed this morning and ate a breakfast of eggs and sausage (Honduran style), toast, and fruit. Then Bruce got everyone organized so that the tools and wood would be loaded as soon as possible. As soon as the military truck arrived, the missioners loaded it with wood, placed the supplies into the back of Frank’s truck, and were on their way to the homes.

Once at the home sites, we discovered the Luis, Maria, and their 4 children had spent the night in their home. There was no roof on it nor any beds, but they wanted to sleep in their new home as soon as possible.

Work quickly began and walls took shape inside each of the homes. Bruce then decided that the missioners could start painting as the tin was going in on top of them. All the brushes and rollers were put into action, both inside and out. By the end of the day, one home was totally painted, had windows and doors, and a roof. Luis, Maria, and family will have a better place to sleep tonight.

We did take a little break for a Coke in a bag. This is a Honduran treat, I’ve discovered. The Honduras purchase a large, cold bottle of Coca Cola, put it into a sandwich bag, stick a straw into it, then tied the top of the bag around the straw. Thus, it’s a Coca en la bolsa. It was a cool refreshment at the end of the work day.

The missioners ended their work day by cleaning brushes, rollers, and paint pans so they’re ready to be back into action on Monday. Tomorrow we will travel to the Basilica de Suyapa and hear a little history of the church. We’ll attend 9:30 mass at the new Basilica before climbing back on board the buses for Valle de Angeles and our tourist day. We’ll eat pizza in a local place. Right next door is an ice cream shop, which is safe for us to enjoy. The students will shop in groups with a couple chaperones. Most all souvenirs can be purchased in one or two shops, as they are fairly similar. Hopefully, everyone will be shopped out by 4 p.m. because that is when we’ll load up for our return trip to our home away from home.

Right now I can hear two different games being played on the concrete playground outside my window. One is a soccer game: USA vs Honduras. The other side of the playground looks like a smaller basketball game. I’m pretty sure that, in this case, the USA team stands very little chance of winning, but they’ll have fun trying.

We’ve been enjoying your comments at the end of junta. More of the missioners will be sending their comments to you later this evening. It’s hard to believe that we are almost to the halfway point of our mission trip. Keep the prayers coming for our continued progress.

  26. Hi, Catherine!

Tim, Noah, and I are so proud of you!! And of everyone there. I love the pictures! Enjoy yourself and the wonderful people you will meet down there. Going on the trip to Honduras is one of the things I wish I did! You are all doing so much good! ❤️

The update on Noah you asked for: After a rough week and a half, we are on good day #3. We held a meeting with his team to ask them to do more about his painful swelling, to find out where we are with his heart, and to come up with a plan to help him with his breathing. This kid is teaching me how to be brave and be his advocate (even if it means sitting in a room with his doctors and nurses and telling them that I feel there is more they need to be doing for him)! I have grown a backbone. He isn't progressing with his breathing and in fact he has gone backwards. So we asked for a pulmonologist to come in and consult so we can hopefully figure out where to go from here to help him so we can prevent the swelling from coming back and hopefully make breathing a little easier for him. He is a fighter though. For a child who has known a lot of suffering in his short little life, he is a very smiley little baby. He had three days where we couldn't get him to open his eyes last week, but he seems to be back to himself. I swear he even giggled today! It was the cutest sound. The nurses call him a little flirt and the doctors joke that he makes his alarms go off just to get someone to come give him attention. But if we dare to change his diaper or take his temp, he is not afraid to let us know we are the biggest pain in the butt for disturbing him. He is feisty and trying to get better so he can come home. He is now 5 pounds 5.5 oz! I can't wait for you to meet him. My greatest hope for him is that he grows up to be kind, loving, and good...like you are. I hope someday he decides he would like to make such a big gesture as going somewhere like Honduras to show the world that people are so good. I hope he has a heart like yours. He is as lucky to have you for an aunt as I am to have you for a sister! We love you so much! Keep being you and show the world how much good you can do!❤️

    Maggie
