Coca en la Bolsa

We had a bit of a late start this morning because of last night’s partying! Well, that’s not exactly true, but the kids, and some adults, had a great time. More about that later.

Most of the crew walked up the mountain to the work site this morning. Those who did not work on the houses stayed behind to work on making gift bags that we’ll be distributing next week.

For the most part, the wood part of the houses is done. Bruce and Jason, along with some of the girls, are at the house site hanging the doors. Pat is working on windows. Everyone else is working on building the 40 beds right here at the compound.

Today’s blog will be relatively short, but I’ll fill it with loads of photos of our activities. Unfortunately, I’m unable to send photos of last night’s festivities because only cell phones work for those pictures. Do I have your curiosity up?

We did outdoor mass last night and invited all the populorum boys (That means boys that live in a community.) to join us. Afterward we had our junta out in the same spot. On the way back into the building, we noticed all those boys outside with a speaker, microphone, a makeshift screen, etc. It was karaoke night, Honduran style. We asked if our students could join in with them, and they said Kuemper had partied with them last week and done a great job. Once we told the kids that, it was challenge accepted! And they had a blast! First they did some warm-up exercises, next was dancing. Finally, we enjoyed a variety of singing. We extended bedtime a bit, and the students came in fairly well worn out.

For today’s fun activity, we plan to walk down the street to a pulperia to have a coca en la bolsa – in English, a Coke in a bag. It’s a Honduran thing.

I almost forgot, it’s Father’s Day in Honduras. We’ll be enjoying pastel (cake) for dessert tonight to honor our fathers. It’ll be a special treat.

Until tomorrow …
