Today we had another type of full, tiresome day. But it was a great one! We started our day headed into Tegucigalpa on buses. We were fortunate to be able to watch our very own Fr. Travis say mass at the Basilica de Suyapa. He gave a wonderful sermon in both English and Spanish and it was appreciated by both our mission group, and a church full of Hondurans.
While visiting the Basilica, we toured the original church, lit candles for loved ones, and made a stop to view where Hondurans offer up prayers for assistance with problems they may have. There was a bakery there that was run by the nuns. While it looked amazing, we kept moving because we had plenty of things to do!
We boarded the buses and were on our way to Santa Lucia, to spend some relaxing time together. Marta Sosa, who helps us in so many ways, has a brother who owns a place nicknamed ‘The Oasis.’ The lush grounds were a big difference from the rocks/dirt we have been seeing for the past few days. We had a delicious meal of shredded beef sandwiches and watermelon. The kids had a chance to do a little hiking and rest in the hammocks. We hiked our way back up the cobblestone streets, and I do mean hike!
Next up, Valley of the Angels. We spent a few hours strolling the streets, doing some souvenir shopping. We had lots of great finds, laughs, and even some ice cream. After this it was time to head back to the school. You may think it was time to rest from there…but you would be wrong!
Juan had plans up his sleeve and when we returned, he dressed in his referee finest and the rematch of the US vs Honduras in soccer began! We had an announcer, a dog dressed in his best Honduran flags, and stands full of supporters. After playing both countries’ national anthems, the Honduran team unfortunately settled the score from the 2019 loss they suffered. The US lost 3-1 with some great effort. A little basketball followed before supper (where we may or may not have lost again). After games, the teams exchanged handshakes and t-shirts/flags.
We had another delicious supper, followed by Junta. We enjoyed our day of rest and are looking forward to tomorrow. We have much to accomplish and are looking forward to making progress as well as getting back to the new friends we have made at the worksite!
